FCL to sell St. Norbert Food Store

October 22, 2019

Red River Co-op is planning to open its eighth food store late next year after recently announcing it will take over the former Marketplace location in St. Norbert, Man.

Owned and operated by Federated Co-operatives Limited (FCL), The Marketplace was forced to close in January 2018 after a water main break caused extensive damage to the store.

“Shortly after the flood at the Marketplace occurred, we heard overwhelming support from St. Norbert residents for another Co-op to be built in its place,” Red River Co-op CEO Doug Wiebe said in a news release.

“We are excited to be able to offer a brand new Red River Co-op grocery store – which will include a pharmacy in addition to an existing gas bar – to better serve the community.”

The facility will be 31,000 square feet, 50 per cent larger than the previous 20,000-square-foot store. Construction has begun with plans for the store to be open for late fall of 2020.

This marks the last Marketplace location operated by FCL in Manitoba. Three other stores in Selkirk, Stonewall and Lorette were leased to Red River Co-op in July 2018 and a fifth location in Winnipeg was closed.

FCL will continue to focus on serving more than 170 independent local co-operatives across Western Canada, largely as a wholesaler.
