Update on Co-op fuel truck collision near Yorkton

July 25, 2019

A truck hauling diesel fuel for Federated Co-operatives Limited (FCL) was involved in a collision with a train on Highway 9 south of Yorkton, Sask., at approximately 11:40 a.m. today.

When incidents such as this happen, our first concern is the safety of everyone involved. Thankfully, the truck driver in this collision was not injured, but we are ensuring that he is receiving attention.

Less than half of the 50,000 litres onboard was lost as a result of the collision. We have a team of experts onsite working with the Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment to safely clean up the fuel and restore the area. The train has been moved and it is expected that the highway will be partially reopened soon after initial clean-up concludes this evening.

We will continue working with the RCMP and other authorities to determine how and why this collision happened and what we can do to prevent future incidents. Trucks hauling Co-op fuel, food and goods travel more than 75 million kilometres every year. Because we’re always on the road, we’re always looking for ways to improve safety and we will apply what we learn from this collision.

An estimated cost of losses and damages as a result of the collision is not available.
