The Co-op Refinery Complex to Proceed with Involuntary Separations

October 4, 2021

Today, the Co-op Refinery Complex (CRC) informed Unifor 594 that the Company will proceed with the reduction of its in-scope workforce. In total, CRC currently employs approximately 1,000 people. The number of employees that are expected to be laid off is 54. Layoffs will follow the exercise of employees’ bumping rights (an internal process based on seniority and qualifications). The Company anticipates that the layoff process will be completed within the next six months.

“This is a difficult decision to reduce our workforce as many good people and their families will be impacted,” said Gil Le Dressay, Vice President of Refinery Operations. “We have tried to minimize the number of people affected by this workforce reduction. However, our business is not immune from the challenges our industry is facing. We must make changes to ensure the long-term sustainability of our Refinery and to protect as many jobs as we can in the future.”

The CRC’s decision to reduce its workforce was made once the Company had undertaken the appropriate steps to ensure that any workforce reduction would not impact the safety and reliability of the Refinery. Ultimately, the need for a workforce reduction is largely the result of operational efficiencies realized over the past number of years as the Company prepares to transition to the low carbon economy.

Permanent layoff notices will be provided to impacted employees at the end of the bumping process and the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement will apply.
