International Day of Co-operatives is July 7

By Dan Yates

July 6, 2018

The International Co-operative Alliance (ICA) is celebrating the International Day of Co-operatives on July 7, 2018, and Federated Co-operatives Limited (FCL) is marking the day with retail co-ops in the Co-operative Retailing System (CRS) and co-ops all over the world. With their 2018 slogan in mind, Sustainable societies through co-operation, the International Day of Co-operatives is a time to reflect on the strengths of the co-operative movement.

Co-operatives provide a different way of doing business. Working to serve their members and strengthen their communities, co-ops are jointly owned and democratically controlled. At FCL and throughout the CRS, promoting the co-operative model and collaborating with other co-operatives is an important part of our identity.

Here are some ways that we support the co-operative model in Western Canada and around the world:

In addition to supporting co-operatives at a governance level, Co-op store shelves are stocked with products from other co-operative organizations. Honey is sourced from Bee Maid Honey, owned by the Manitoba Cooperative Honey Producers and Albert Honey Producers Co-operative Limited. Scotsburn Co-operative Services in Nova Scotia produces Co-op Gold premium ice cream and Co-operative Coffee beans come from Reyna del Café, a co-operative in Nicaragua. Sustainable, local fish comes from co-operatives located in northern communities.

Be sure to follow the hashtag #coopsday on social media to see what’s going on the world of the co-operative movement.
