Community Spaces program nationally recognized

By Dan Yates

June 7, 2018

Co-ops are committed to building strong, vibrant communities. That’s why one of their most important initiatives is the Co-op Community Spaces program, which helps to protect, beautify and improve spaces from Manitoba to Vancouver Island.

This year, Co-op Community Spaces, which is administered by Federated Co-operatives Limited (FCL) on behalf of more than 180 retail co-ops across Canada, has been recognized along with global competitors by two organizations: the Retail Council of Canada (RCC) and the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC).

RCC Excellence in Retailing Award

FCL received the Philanthropic Leadership award for its Community Spaces program at the RCC Excellence in Retailing Awards on May 29, 2018.

This award recognizes retailers with programs that respond creatively and collaboratively to a community’s needs in areas such as youth programming, social services and more. FCL was one of two organizations that RCC recognized for Philanthropic Leadership, alongside The Body Shop. Thirty-nine organizations were represented at the awards.

"The winners of the Excellence in Retailing Awards are true exemplars of Canada's retail best," said Diane J. Brisebois, President and CEO of Retail Council of Canada. "Each of these retail organizations is driven to deliver superior customer service, innovative business solutions and leadership in store operations. We are inspired and improved as an industry by their many accomplishments."

IABC Gold Quill Awards

On June 5, 2018, FCL was given the Award of Merit for Corporate Social Responsibility at the IABC Gold Quill Awards ceremony in Montréal, Que.

IABC’s Gold Quill Awards have recognized excellence in business communication on a global scale for more than 40 years. The Award of Merit for Corporate Social Responsibility is given to organizations which communicate social responsibility, encourage positive actions and focus on enhancing their communities. The full list of winners is available here.

“These Gold Quill special awards are a mark of excellence,” said Stephanie Doute, CAE, Executive Director of IABC. “We are thrilled to be recognizing these communications strategies which have successfully driven business results and look forward to celebrating with the recipients at the IABC World Conference.”

Building our communities

“The Co-op Community Spaces program is one of the many ways Co-op supports the communities where we operate. It’s an authentic and meaningful demonstration of our brand and purpose as a co-operative. It’s an honour for the program to be recognized by both RCC and IABC as a leading philanthropic initiative,” said Natasha Ford, Social Responsibility Manager at FCL.

Since 2015, Co-op Community Spaces has provided $4.5 million to 64 projects all over Western Canada, including community gardens, recreation facilities, and conservation projects. In 2018, Community Spaces will provide $2 million in capital funding for projects between $25,000 and $150,000.
