Cody Smith is a learner for life.

“I believe in education and broadening the scope of my knowledge and skills,” said Cody, a category development manager in the Home and Building Supplies Department.

Over his 18-year career, Cody developed those skills with internal and external training supported by FCL. These include broad training sessions to provide soft skills, explain corporate initiatives and provide leadership development. In 2015, Cody initiated a six-month category management course so his team will be more consumer centric and strategic in their approach to business.

He also received tuition assistance for completing an MBA.

“I wanted to become prepared for a management role and advance my career,” he said. “FCL is willing to invest in people and provide the opportunity to improve competencies.”

Training and skills development can also be learned informally. Cody has contributed to FCL’s United Way Committee and Community Investment Fund Committee at Home Office. He’s also a local Habitat for Humanity board member and volunteer with his two sons’ hockey teams.

“It allows you to look at things from a different perspective. You’re not involved in the day-to-day operation and have to provide leadership and strategic direction.”

Not only is it another learning opportunity, it’s a way he can give back.
