Dip-inspired chip among New Product Award winners

August 18, 2020

Bold new takes on sweet treats and savoury snacks have earned Co-op two new awards.

The Retail Council of Canada has chosen two of Federated Co-operatives Limited’s (FCL) innovative food products as winners in the 27th annual Grand Prix New Product Awards: CO-OP® GOLD Cookie Cake (private-label desserts - fresh/refrigerated or frozen category) and CO-OP GOLD PURE® Kettle Cooked Potato Chips in Honey Dill flavour (private-label snack – savoury category). The awards were announced at a virtual gala on July 30.

“It’s an honour to be chosen for the Grand Prix New Product Awards,” said Sav Bellissimo, Store Brands Manager at FCL.

“The Store Brands and Marketing Teams work hard to bring creative new products and flavours to Co-ops in Western Canada, and to see that work recognized through these awards is very meaningful. Thank you to our local Co-ops for all of the work they do bringing the products to their members and customers.”

Each year, manufacturers, suppliers and distributors are invited to enter new products to be judged by a jury of industry experts. Winning products are chosen based on innovation and originality, product characteristics, presentation and packaging and overall consumer value.

The winning entries from Co-op take classic snacks and give them a twist: the cake is made entirely of cookies and the chip flavour is better known as a quintessentially Manitoban dip. In fact, the honey dill chips were originally released as an exclusive flavour at Red River Co-op, thanks to an idea sparked by Winnipeg radio DJ Ace Burpee.

From their launch in August 2019 until March 2020, 25 cents from each bag of honey dill chips purchased was donated to The Dream Factory, an organization dedicated to fulfilling dreams for Manitoba children battling a life-threatening illness. Now, Co-op members and customers can find honey dill chips in Co-op Food Stores and Co-op Gas Bars/Convenience Stores across Western Canada.

Since 2016, FCL has won at the Grand Prix New Product Awards for eight other products, including Co-op Gold Pure Walleye and Northern Pike, Co-op Gold Pure Soaps and Co-op Gold Potstickers.
