Open letter: Preparing for the future

November 18, 2019

The Co-op Refinery Complex (CRC) is focused on the future; we are working hard to prepare for both the opportunities and challenges that come with the transition to a low-carbon economy. We are determined to invest and adapt so that we can continue to meet the economic needs of our community – including providing well-paid jobs in the City of Regina for the next generation, and hopefully beyond.

We are currently in the process of negotiating a new Collective Bargaining Agreement with Unifor, the union representing unionized workers at the Refinery. During the negotiations, we have proposed giving employees a choice to transition from the current Defined Benefit Pension Plan to a Defined Contribution Pension Plan. This is a big change and we understand that. That is why we have offered employees a fair financial package that protects and ensures that they, and their families, are provided options that offer long-term financial stability and the secure retirement options they expect and deserve.

We are proposing these changes because we understand that a shift in our traditional fossil fuel market is already taking place and we must be prepared to address the challenges with significant investment in our Refinery, while protecting our employees’ future. Change can be scary, but we know that as traditional fuel markets evolve there will be opportunities to adapt to meet the future energy and transportation needs of our province and our region.

Our Mission at CRC is to Fuel Western Canada. For more than 80 years, we have helped Fuel Western Canada by producing fuels that keep the Western Canadian economy moving; whether that be agriculture, commercial transportation, your family vacation or daily commute.

Change is inevitable. However, we are confident that the changes we are making today will lead to a productive, prosperous and sustainable future. If we make the right investments today, tomorrow offers a host of opportunities to thrive. Together with our people and our community, we will continue to play an important role in fuelling the success of all of us who call Western Canada home.
